Certain things complement each other, go hand in hand, and simply make each other better. An example of this is exercise and nutrition.

There are several aspects of life that we simply don’t have much control over. But luckily to help our current and future health, we can control our diet and exercise routines. Revere Health explains, “The largest benefit of a great diet and regular exercise is the way it helps your body stave off diseases and other conditions. Your body’s immune system is a complex machine, and diet and exercise can heavily affect it.” You probably have always been told these things are important, but do you actually know why they’re essential to your health and why you need to work on both nutrition and exercise?

Have you ever thought to yourself that you can eat whatever you want as long as you exercise harder next week? This isn’t a very good attitude to have. Marissa Vicario explains, “You cannot exercise like a maniac and expect the best results, especially if you’re not feeding your body with the right foods. Food is fuel and it provides the nutrients and the vitamins we need to lose weight, maintain lean body mass, and to keep our metabolism and our energy levels stable throughout the day.” Finding balance is very important, eating whatever you want and exercising or starving yourself and not exercising are not healthy for you and can actually push you farther away from reaching your goals.

Exercising has many benefits! It can help you in work and life while boosting your confidence and health. How long you need to exercise depends on the health goals you want to achieve. It also can vary depending on the type of exercise you are doing. Medline Plus recommends for adults to “Get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity each week. Or you could do a combination of the two.”  Find time a few times each week to exercise, you don’t want to overdo it as your muscles need time to heal and strengthen.

Nutrition

Sometimes eating healthy doesn’t seem fun but with some simple changes, it can actually be easy and very rewarding. Eating a balanced diet is going to be the best thing that you can do. Tufts Health Plan recommends:

  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Whole Grains
  • Low Fat or Fat-Free Milk
  • Lean Meats
  • Protein

This will allow you to get a variety of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that your body needs! HHS explains this is important because, “Your food choices each day affect your health — how you feel today, tomorrow, and in the future.” And if you want to feel great now and forever, you need to eat well!
